Skateboard Grip Tape

The griptape works take the language of the Surelo Collection and carry it off the wall and onto the ground. Art printed onto skateboard grip tape, meant to be ridden.

The figures hold the same line and economy as the sculpture, near-recognizable faces drawn from anime and early animation, but set on a surface built to be stepped on, scuffed, and worn down.

Where Surelo lived as object and image, the griptape pushes it into motion, into friction, into the street. The work doesn’t ask to be looked at. It asks to be used.
